Report from the SWICC championship

[:en]Thanks to Stuart Parnell for the nice report from the SWICC championship, Stuart was running Kyosho Plazma, NVison Lipos and Kronos Tires.

The first round of South West Inter Club Championship (SWICC) was held this past weekend (22nd March) at Frome RC club. This year’s championship is covered by 12 indoor rounds held at 6 clubs (2 rounds per meeting) and an outdoor round (not to count towards driver’s championship).

In LMP last year’s champion Marcus Askell was absent due to attending the 12th Euros at the Hudy arena, which meant a good opportunity for the other competitors to grab some valuable points.

The club had laid out a challenging but fast track on the 18mx14m hall, the only issue being the rather unforgiving track markings. One mistake and a car could be airborn due to plastic guttering being used!

From Round 1 of qualifying Lesro Models driver Stuart Parnell with his Nvision powered Kyosho Plazma Ra stamped his authority and remained unchallenged throughout qualifying. The qualifying rounds were 6 minutes and Finals to be 8 minutes. The first qualifying was run and finished at 5 minutes much to the surprise of all involved, a quick adjustment was made for round 2 and 3. Stuart took Round 1 by 14 laps, Round 2 by 4 laps and Round 3 by 2 laps with an FTQ of 40 Laps in 365.20, fastest lap of 8.69 and an average of 9.10.

A quick diff rebuild, a change up in pinion to a 38 and a change to harder tyres for the 8 minute finals was all that was needed for Stuart’s Plazma. The first final Stuart lead away from pole unchallenged, but another timing issue meant the 1st final finished at 6 minutes Stuart winning in 40 laps in 361.77 with a fastest lap of 8.73 and an average of 9.03.

The second final had been adjusted to run for 8 minutes, Stuart returned to his lowering gearing of 37/76 as the motor felt a little soft in the previous final. Again Stuart lead away from pole and remained unchallenged the whole race. A chunked rear tyre after a lapping issue meant that Stuart had to take the first hairpin a bit easier for the last few laps but still won by 2 laps winning in 53 laps in 488.84 with a fastest lap of 8.54 and an average of 9.21.

For the first meeting out with the Plazma Ra Stuart was very happy with its handling and would like to thank Neil at Kyosho for his setup tips during the build. The Nvision batteries and Kronos tyres performed well throughout the day.

The next round is held at Weymouth on April 19th and with the possible return of last year’s champion it could be a whole lot closer on the tight and twisty Weymouth track.
